Dato' Dr Shaari Isa
Malaysia’s literature is time honoured with generations of influential writers. Some of their writings have made a mark in chronicling Malaysia’s course of history. Some of their stories have also graced the red carpet of Hollywood. But each and everyone of them have inspired future generations of writers to contribute to Malaysia’s literature, for generations to come.
However, as for Dr. Shaari Isa his legacy shines in quieter corners, tucked between the pages of his historical novels, non-fiction works, and academic texts. While few even recognise Dr Shaari Isa as a person, his contributions to Malaysian literature and education resonate deeply. His literary works are subject to much admiration as well as scrutiny, and his academic literatures are innovative as well as withstanding the test of time. Eight decades of academia, writing, and accounting infuse his every sentence with wisdom, challenging and inspiring generations.
Dr. Shaari Isa's career reflects a life dedicated to nurturing knowledge. Prior to obtaining a PhD in Accountancy from Waikato University New Zealand, Dr Shaari Isa held several positions in the education field. As a lecturer at the prestigious teachers training academy at Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris, he ignited the minds of countless future educators which paved the foundational road for several thousand outstanding graduates who went out and excelled in their respective fields.
He was also the Bursar at Universiti Utara Malaysia and placed the first keystone in the university’s enduring legacy. But his most profound impact might lie in shaping the very fabric of education itself. As the Assistant Director in the Ministry of Education he had shaped the accountancy syllabus in Malaysia public schools, and is still applicable to this day ensuring generations of students grasped the language of numbers.
In his multifaceted career spanning six decades in academia, writing and accounting, he has contributed over 60 historical novels, fiction, nonfiction and multiple academic literatures touching on education and accountancy.
Retirement hasn't slowed Dr. Shaari Isa down. Between lively rallies on the tennis court with his wife and grandchildren, and playful hide-and-seek with his great-grandson, he continues to weave stories. His interest now pivots back to his original interest in historical novels, where the echoes of the past resonate with the conflicts of the present.
Perhaps it's the twinkle in his eye during a debate, the gentle wisdom shared over tea, or the quiet determination in his writing, but Dr. Shaari Isa reminds us that true impact often happens away from the spotlight, leaving behind a legacy richer than any award.
